Materials: 5-10 flashcards, Show – Say – Sort Mat
Using the Sorting Facts Mat:
Session A (The first 5 facts…)
- Start with 5 cards.
- Show 1 card.
- Child says the answer to the addition or subtraction fact.
- Sort the fact in one of the three piles on the sorting mat.
- Repeat until all 5 cards are in the “I knew it!” pile.
Session B (The next 5 facts…)
- Review the same 5 cards from Session A until all are in the “I knew it!” pile.
- Choose 5 new cards.
- Show – say – sort with 5 new facts.
- Repeat until all 5 cards are in the “I knew it!” pile.
Once 10 or more facts are learned…
- Shuffle the cards you know and choose 5 at random.
- Show – say – sort to check for mastery.
- Add 5 new cards.
- Show – say – sort with the 5 new facts.
- Repeat until all 5 cards are in the “I knew it!” pile.
No matter which card is picked, your goal is to answer correctly and automatically.
Examples of Explaining Answers/Methods
- Addition/Subtraction
- Using Doubles: 3+4=7 because it is one more than 3+3
- Using 10 Facts: 9+4 is the same as 10+3
- Multiplication/Division
- Doubling Method: 4×6= 24 because 4×3=12 and 12+12=24
- Using Known Facts: 4×6=24 because 4×5=20 and 4 more is 24
