This is my sixth year teaching at Barcroft Elementary (my personal record), but I have taught at 9 different schools so far in my career. I taught for many years in Florida in the Tampa area before moving to Virginia to teach in Fairfax and then Arlington. I have been a homeroom teacher for every grade, 2nd through 6th, as well as a Gifted Resource Teacher for 12 of my years in Tampa. Japan is my place of birth, and as a child I lived in Japan, Maryland, Puerto Rico, and Pensacola, Florida (child of Navy parents). I received my undergraduate degree in education from the University of West Florida, and my graduate program was completed at the University of South Florida. I never stopped loving to learn and continue to strive to be the best person I can. Currently, my passion is learning about the healing powers of fruits and vegetables.

Thank you welcoming me into #TeamBarcroft. I am excited to be returning to Arlington once again. For the past two years, I have been living and teaching 3rd at an international school in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Previously, I have taught KG, 1st and 4th grade at two other schools in APS. I love to spend time outdoors and go on adventure travels at every opportunity. If you wake up early enough in the morning, you might also see me hitting the streets and trails around Arlington, I am an avid runner. Cheers! -Melinda Metz

I received my Elementary and TESOL certifications from Penn State (We Are!) and my Master’s in Math Education from George Mason. I’ve been a classroom teacher and a teacher of English. I’ve taught students from over 23 countries! I’m always looking forward to a new adventure, whether a road trip up interstate 95, or a 28 hour journey to Australia.

Hi! My name is Candice Barrett. This is my sixth year teaching at Barcroft Elementary School. At Barcroft, I have taught 2nd, 3rd, and now 4th grade. I graduated from the University of Kansas with a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in TESOL. I was born in South Africa, and since then have lived in Singapore, and all over the United States. My favorite subject to teach is Reading. In my free time I enjoy traveling with my husband, spending time with my friends, and, of course, reading!

Hello! My name is Janet Dorn and I am originally from St. Paul, Minnesota. I love teaching English as a Second Language to my Barcroft students. I was a second language learner and the first person in my family to go to college. This school year is exciting for me because after many years in 1st grade, this will be my first year teaching 4th grade. When I’m not at school, I like to spend time exploring new places and new foods with my friends and family.

My name is Loren Valcourt. This year I will be serving as a co-teacher in the fourth grade. I am originally from the island of Jamaica. I am a career “switcher”. I was at first a para-legal with the IRS. I began my teaching career in New York City Public Schools. When my husband changed careers too, we moved here to Northern Virginia. It has been my pleasure to work with students of various abilities and learning styles for 15 years. I love gardening, but when it’s too cold to play outside, I crochet.
